Unemployment is only a state of mind. If you don’t like living in that state, move!

Marleen Graham points out in her article, How to Stay Positive and Reinvent Yourself While Unemployed, that being unemployed negatively affects our “state of mind” making it difficult to see past our current circumstances. It is essential to keep yourself positive during your search; negativity spills over into your interactions with potential employers and can sabotage your best efforts to obtain a job.

One of the best ways to keep yourself positive, to add new skills to your resume, or to just eliminate an employer’s fear that you have become stale after a lengthy period of unemployment is to volunteer.  Pick an area that relates to your profession or something that you always have had a passion for and begin to reap the rewards.

Volunteer at The New England Job Show: Boost your skills, give back to the community

The hardest part of being out of work is keeping a positive attitude when a job search turns from weeks into months. And it is so important that you keep a positive attitude, both for your own emotional well-being as well as for the impression you give to potential employers.

Many people find that volunteering offers a way to keep skills current, to develop skills that you suddenly find are needed in order to make you a viable candidate, and preserve a sense of self worth. Doreen Martel recently wrote an article that highlights why YOU should consider volunteering today. She points out some other skills that you can add to your resume:

  • Interpersonal Skills
  • Public Speaking
