Being unemployed can be a low point in many people’s lives, and it is something that almost all of us will all experience at some time. However, the way you handle being unemployed can teach you a number of lessons about yourself, your attitude towards life, and your relationship with money.

When you adjust your attitude, your spending habits and your money management to suit your new unemployed status, you may be surprised at how well you can really live with less money.

Change Your Attitude When You’re Unemployed

There is no doubt that being unemployed can be a depressing and frustrating time in your life. However, to maintain a lifestyle, and overcome this obstacle, you need to take control of your thoughts and attitudes, and live well.

1 – Make looking for a job your job

While it can be tempting to sleep until lunch time every day when you are unemployed, this is not an attitude which will help you find a new job, nor does it mean you are living well. Staying Motivated: Let’s Walk, Having a Routine is Important to Your Job Search

It was raining the other morning at 6:00 AM, so I did what felt natural—I went back to bed. That was a mistake I discovered later in the day. I was sluggish and not on top of my game. My workshops were uninspiring, and I noticed a monotone in my voice. All day I was looking forward to my walk the following morning, regardless of rain or snow in the forecast.

There are many self-help articles on how to stay motivated the job search. One article I ran across in my Internet surfing offers suggestions on how you can do to stay motivated if you’re out of work. I saw this article on the New England Job Show. The author, Randall Davidson, gives 10 ways to stay motivated, » Read more: Staying Motivated: Let’s Walk, Having a Routine is Important to Your Job Search

By Judit Price, MS, CDFI, IJCTC, CCM, CPRW

A large proportion of my client base includes 40, 50 and even 60 year olds.  Many of them are still employed, but are unhappy with their situation.  Others have been or will soon be downsized, generally through no fault of their own.  Unfortunately, too many have not yet internalized the fact that the world of work has dramatically changed, probably permanently.  Too many managers, technical professionals and other specialists have not yet accepted the fact that someone in another hemisphere is after their job.

The fact is there are jobs available, especially for college educated professionals.  Hiring managers would be only too happy to hire qualified, motivated employees at home, if they were available, and although there are experienced people who are technically qualified the problem is finding the right kind of truly “motivated” employees.

Senior managers, headhunters and HR professionals routinely complain that too many employees, and many new hires, including those who have been unemployed for many, many months, simply have not internalized the importance of total commitment to the job. » Read more: Job Search Tips: The job will not come to you
