Twitter: How To Use It For Your Job Search

February 24th, 2010

Twitter.  It is in the news just about every day.  At seminars, workshops, and networking meeting job seekers are advised to add a Twitter strategy to their job hunt marketing plan. Yet it seems that most people don’t really have any idea how to strategically use the technology to better their chances of landing a job.

Instead of tweeting about your morning trip to Dunkin Donuts develop a strategy that compliments your job seeking goals.  The best place to start on that strategy is to find knowledgeable resources that can educate you on the best uses of Twitter.  A former NEJS blog contributor, Marci Reynolds, has recently written and released an eBook that can act as a guide as you move into the Twitter world.

Although there are many books in circulation covering how to use Twitter for business this new eBook,  “How To Use Twitter For Your Job Search” , is one of the few resources dedicated to the unique needs of job seekers.

The eBook covers topics such as increasing your online visibility (SEO) with Twitter, finding real time job postings on Twitter, connecting with recruiters on Twitter and creating and implementing your tweet content strategy.  For a better idea of what the book covers View the Table of Contents.

“How To Use Twitter For Your Job Search” is available now for immediate download for just $5.00, with secure PayPal processing.  You can also buy a Kindle version from Amazon.com.

Job search tips: What You Should Know About Confidentiality Agreements

October 19th, 2009

One of the keys to success when looking for a new job is focusing on the future . . . the next interview, the next career move. However, there is one area that job seekers must consider, which requires looking back.  And, that area is-  the legal agreements you signed at your last place of employment.

In particular, I have received questions from job seekers about confidentiality agreements and how these agreements impact what we say, what we blog about and what we include in our online profiles.

I recently had the opportunity to interview Richard Berger, a Boston area attorney who specializes in Employment Law. Richard answered your top 3 questions about confidentiality agreements via video. Just click on the photo below and enjoy!

5 Alternatives To Blogging for Your Job Search

There are many benefits to publishing online content for your job search- but blogging is not the only way. There are many alternatives to blogging that job seekers can leverage to expand and reinforce their online brand and help to improve their online visibility. I’ll cover 5 in this blog post.

What Are The Goals of Publishing Online Content?

When you decide to publish content online for your job search, you have three main goals…

First you want to demonstrate, via the content, your skills, experiences, expertise and thought leadership. The content you publish can bring your resume or LinkedIn profile alive.

Second,  if you are in a profession that requires outstanding writing skills, publishing online content is a way to demonstrate your writing skills.

Last, online content can help with your search engine optimization. Said another way- if someone Googles your name, your online content should come up in search results.

What are 5 Alternatives To Blogging for Your Job Search?

The first alternative to blogging that I want to share is article writing & publishing. This is the process of writing individual, original articles on the business topics of your choice and publishing them on article marketing websites such as Hub Pages or Associated Content.  Article writing gives you the freedom to write as few or as many articles as you want and publish them at any time. If you decide to write articles, each entry should be a minimum of 500 words, to provide the full search engine optimization benefits.

I’d like to share my tips on Building a Tweet Content Strategy For Your Job Search.

When I discuss using Twitter with job seekers one of the most common objections I hear is, “I don’t know what to Tweet about.” As a result, many job seekers are not using Twitter.

As you probably know, Twitter is one of the most popular, social networking websites on the Internet and more than 20 million people visit Twitter every month. These visitors include hiring managers, human resources and recruiters that work for the companies that you want to work for. So.. I recommend that every Job Seeker use Twitter.

In an earlier blog post, I reviewed 5 ways job seekers can use Twitter for their job search. Today’s post will provide tips on the actual Tweet publishing; what to write about, where to get ideas and how often to publish them.  This is often called a Tweet content strategy. (Note: There is a video version of this post, available here.)

What Kind Of Tweets Should You Publish?

Online Branding, Social Media & SEO Expert

There are many ways that using Twitter can help job seekers with their job search strategy and online branding.  I will cover five in today’s blog post.

It’s Not Just A LinkedIn World

I recently surveyed job seekers in the Massachusetts area about their online presence and found that while most job seekers had set up a LinkedIn profile, very few were using Twitter.

As you probably know, Twitter is one of the most popular, social networking websites on the internet and more than 20 million people visit Twitter every month.

These visitors include hiring managers, human resources staffers and recruiters that work for the companies that you want to work for. So, I recommend that every Job Seeker uses Twitter. Here are some specifics..

1) Using Twitter can expand and reinforce your online brand

By writing a compelling, keyword rich profile AND publishing high quality, targeted Tweets you will promote and demonstrate your skills, abilities, knowledge… and differentiate yourself from the competition.
