There are lots of lists out there for you to follow.  Top this and top that.  At this point in my job search I feel like I have become numb to the top things to do.  I value practical advice, even if I have to read it several times before it actually sinks in and I start following it.  And these top ten lists are starting to get on my nerves.

I recently saw an article by Jill Czeczuga, and yes, it is a top 10 listing.  But going back to the practical advice, it is a list of basics that might be good to tape up next to your desk.  After months of searching it is easy to get burned out.  If you find that your whole day has slipped away with nothing accomplished, you have just jumped a few levels in Mafia Wars, or you would rather clean the basement out than scan job listings it might be time to do something to get yourself back on track.

Hence the taping of the the list next to your desk.

You have finally received a job offer.  After being out of work for so long the temptation is to jump on it right away.  Not so fast.

Just as you put in the time to understand the company that just offered you the position you should put in the time in to make sure the offer is what you want.  Many people who have been job searching in the past year have had had their happiness at being offered a job shaken when they see the dollars they are being offered.  An offer is not always just about the money but it is the place we first start.

Can you really negotiate salary during these tough economic times?

“This is no time to roll over and just take what they give you,”  Ford Myers, author of Get the Job You Want, Even When No One’s Hiring and president of Career Potential, a job consulting and coaching firm based in Philadelphia told Forbes.com last year.  You made it to the top of the resume pile; you succeeded in passing the other candidates in the interview process.  You have already proven you are the one for the job.  They don’t want to start the search all over.

“Companies expect you to negotiate,” says Myers,. “They’ll be disappointed if you don’t, since you’re hired to be smart and savvy when doing business dealings for their firm. They don’t want you to be a pushover.” » Read more: Negotiation: Know Your Own Worth

A strong network is critical to your success in this poor hiring market.  Many jobs never reach the jobs boards and you need that network to help you uncover them.  It is worth the effort to spend a day analyzing the state of your current network and developing a plan to use that network to be more effective in your job search.

Part of that analysis involves the quality of the network.  Do you have the right people in place to help uncover opportunities.  Tai Goodwin wrote an article that is worth reviewing, the  Top 10 People You Must Have in Your Network.

Here are the top 10 people that should be in your network…

  1. The Mentor: This is the person who has reached the level of success you aspire to have. You can learn from their success as well as their mistakes. Heed their wisdom and experience. This relationship offers a unique perspective because they have known you through several peaks and valleys in your life and watched you evolve.
  2. The Coach: The coach is someone who comes in at different times in your life. They help with critical decisions and transitions and offer an objective perspective with no strings attached.
  3. The Industry Insider: This is someone in your chosen field who has expert level information or access to it.
