Job Search Tips: Five Tips for the Student Worker

Given the state of the economy, it’s understandable that we hear a lot about the difficulties new college graduates are facing as they enter the work force. What we don’t hear a lot about is the job-seeker who is still a full time college student. The college years are, however, one of the most important stages of a young person’s working life. In addition to enabling a student to embody self-reliance by taking on as many of their own expenses as possible (or saving for the future), this is a time to build a foundation of work experience that can make the full transition from student to professional a much easier one when the time comes. In this article I’ll share some tips on how a self-reliant young adult can make the most of their time as a working student.

Career Tips: What is the Best Work Experience for Engineering Students?

Regardless of what field you are working towards a degree in, experience is paramount.  We are all familiar with the scenario of the job-hunter that gets turned down because he or she lacks the proper experience to make the grade.  In the field of engineering experience is of particular importance, and anybody that’s somebody in the field can attest to the fact that this is more true now than it was even just a decade ago.  Experience is so important that students shouldn’t wait until they have received their degree (even just a bachelor’s degree) to begin accumulating work experience within the field of engineering, but rather they should seek out opportunities to garnish their résumés during school—the sooner the better, and the longer the better!

All of this raises the inevitable question: What type of work experience should an engineering student seek out?  The answer to that question has a few different facets, and ultimately the idea is that students obtain work experience that directly relates to the branch of engineering that they want to specialize in.  Students should have relatively modest expectations regarding what kinds of opportunities they will be able to land, especially if they are still studying at the undergraduate level.  Though getting paid while you accrue experience is always a welcome perk, students » Read more: Career Tips: What is the Best Work Experience for Engineering Students?

Career Tips: Insights on where to look for internships

If you are lucky enough you have a great College Career Services department that provides you not only with the guidance you need but also a list of companies that are ready to provide you with paid internship opportunities.

Okay, now reality.

There is a lot of competition for those internship positions.  You may use your Career Service Department as resources but you must be responsible for finding your own internship.  Determine if you have to have a paid internship.  Can you afford an unpaid internship?  If your choice is unpaid internship or no internship, can you afford not to have an internship?

What does that mean?  It means do you have enough experience that you can put on your resume that you won’t need an internship to add depth?  If not, you really need to consider finding a way to take that unpaid internship.
