Job Search Tips: Where’s the Shovel, Where’s the Job?

February 6th, 2011

By Bob McIntosh, CPRW, MBTI

As I often think of things career-related, I thought about the Hidden Job Market (HJM) when my wife and I were shoveling our walkway. The problem I had was trying to locate another shovel whose location was only known by my wife. It’s under the snow pile, she told me.

Where exactly, I replied.

Under that huge pile, she pointed to a mountainous heap.

I first became interest in the HJM after reading Unlock the Hidden Job Market by Duncan Mathison. I speak often of the HJM when I lead workshops like Career Networking, LinkedIn, Job Search Letters, and whenever the urge hits me. The topic is appropriate in almost every workshop.

It is something that is amazing to watch and know you played a part in, regardless how large or small.

After I retired, I began volunteering full time with Mustard Seed International (MSI). MSI ministers to lost and hurting people by sponsoring schools, medical facilities and homes for abandoned, orphaned and neglected children in far away and often forgotten places around the world such as Africa, Eastern Europe, Taiwan, India and Southeast Asia. MSI makes this happen by utilizing a 100 percent volunteer administrative staff at its headquarters in the United States. MSI could not exist without its volunteers, many of whom are retired and using their time and skills to help suffering and hurting people in some of the most desperate places on earth.

Volunteering my time and resources to a worthy cause is something that makes me wake up with a » Read more: Career Transition: How to make a change to the non-profit world
