Finding a job can be difficult enough when you consider the time spent writing your resume, hunting for jobs, attending interviews and trying to gain the perfect position.  So it’s no wonder job hunters are so weary of job negotiations.  Sadly, job negotiations are an important aspect of finding the right job for you and a reality for any job hunter today.  Here are some things to keep in mind when negotiating your next employment opportunity.

Know Your Value

Understanding the value you bring to a company is important.  Eventually it will be imperative to express just how you will be an asset to the company looking to hire you.  Be confident in your experience and education and trust the value you hold for the company.  Undervaluing yourself in an interview or job negotiation may lead to lower pay rate or even losing the position all together.

Negotiation: Ten Easy Ways To Improve Your Negotiation

No matter your profession, negotiation is part of your work.  Think about the last time you met with your boss to discuss projects, overall performance, or a raise.  What about a committee meeting to update your company’s strategic plan?  In these situations you have to engage in some level of negotiation; from setting the agenda to identifying next steps and responsible parties.

Whatever the level of negotiation it amazes me how little we think about improving these skills.  Recently I ‘Googled’ negotiation books and was overwhelmed by the hundreds of hits I received.  Who has time to read them all?  If you feel the same way, I would like to offer my list of 10 easy ways to improve your negotiation proficiency.  The observations below were gleaned from my own experiences in both the corporate and academia worlds.

Negotiation: Know Your Own Worth

You have finally received a job offer.  After being out of work for so long the temptation is to jump on it right away.  Not so fast.

Just as you put in the time to understand the company that just offered you the position you should put in the time in to make sure the offer is what you want.  Many people who have been job searching in the past year have had had their happiness at being offered a job shaken when they see the dollars they are being offered.  An offer is not always just about the money but it is the place we first start.

Can you really negotiate salary during these tough economic times?

“This is no time to roll over and just take what they give you,”  Ford Myers, author of Get the Job You Want, Even When No One’s Hiring and president of Career Potential, a job consulting and coaching firm based in Philadelphia told Forbes.com last year.  You made it to the top of the resume pile; you succeeded in passing the other candidates in the interview process.  You have already proven you are the one for the job.  They don’t want to start the search all over.
