Though many demographics suffer during economic recessions the one that always gets hit the most is that of single mothers and their children.  The conditions keeping single moms and their children under the poverty line in the United States are well documented: daycare that costs more than minimum wage pays, rising health care costs, lack of opportunity for job training, and insufficient career advancement are just some examples.  Although government programs and nonprofit organizations do great work to support these single moms and their children, they rarely ever provide the opportunity for them to break the cycle of poverty and the reliance on these generous programs. Unemployment is only a state of mind. If you don’t like living in that state, move!

November 19th, 2010

Marleen Graham points out in her article, How to Stay Positive and Reinvent Yourself While Unemployed, that being unemployed negatively affects our “state of mind” making it difficult to see past our current circumstances. What are the benefits of volunteering?
