Job Opportunities: Green Jobs, Fact or Fiction

March 10th, 2010

By Jackie Simmonds, NEJS Blog Editor

Jackie Simmonds Green Jobs are of interest to many job seekers who are doing some soul searching and looking for a way to “give back”, find personal satisfaction and apply the skills they have gained during their careers.  But where are they?  And are they available for someone who doesn’t already have a Ph.D.?  I have looked for green marketing positions and have only found ones that are so technical that I am hopelessly under qualified.  How do you find a green position and make that career transition?

Although there are now more than 80 green job boards online — among them SustainableBusiness.com, EnvironmentalCareer.com, and TreeHugger – Carol McClelland Ph.D., founder and executive director of a Web site called Green Career Central says that many great opportunities can be found only through networking.  “This is even more true for green jobs because so much of the growth in the green economy now is local. It’s happening city by city, town by town,” she says. “So start or expand your green network by joining local conservation groups.” You can also find groups on LinkedIn and other online social networks that share your interest.

McClelland, who is also author of a highly useful new book, Green Careers for Dummies, says  “Major economic shifts always happen slowly. We’re moving to a new economy — what author Thomas Friedman called the Energy-Climate Economy — and it’s just getting started.” » Read more: Job Opportunities: Green Jobs, Fact or Fiction

NH Governor John Lynch Announces a Three-Part Initiative to Help Workers

January 28th, 2010

By Michele Moon, NEJS Public Relations Manager

Gov. John Lynch

Governor John Lynch

Salem NH – January 25, 2010 – Governor John Lynch and Commissioner Tara Reardon announced at a NHES sponsored networking meeting NHnetWORKS, New Hampshire’s Three-Part Initiative to help its workers. This initiative focuses on keeping individuals working, employing the unemployed and training.

Part I – Stay at Work focuses on keeping individuals employed.  As businesses experience a temporary slow down, they may find it necessary to adjust their personnel accordingly.  Under this plan, instead of individuals being laid off, their hours would be cut, but their benefits would remain in place and lost wages could be augmented by unemployment benefits.

Part II – Return to Work focuses on assisting the unemployed in their effort to find employment.  Under this portion of the initiative, companies would be encourage to bring in a prospective new hire and train them for up to 6 weeks (24 hours per week maximum) at no cost to the company.  This benefits the candidate by giving them the opportunity to pursue a new career path or industry.  During this training period, the individual participating in the training would continue to collect unemployment benefits until they are hired.

Part III – Skills Assessment and Training will evaluate a worker skill set.  Based on the results, individuals will have the opportunity to upgrade their skills and they be certified as “Work Ready”.

This program will be rolled out in 3 stages.  Part II is expected to be launched in late Spring, followed by Part I in July (after legislative approval) and finally Part III.  Part III will be expanded further in 2011 when job training funds double over 2010 levels.

About NHnetWORKS

NHnetWORKS is a networking group of professionals either in transition or working, living, or interested in doing business in New Hampshire.  Its purpose is to help people advance professionally and to assist them with successful business and organizational activities.  Run by Nicole Tessier, Founder and Director, the Group meets from 9 a.m. to noon  every Monday at SNHU’s 25 Pelham Road, Salem NH campus.

The Top 5 Behaviors To Avoid

October 16th, 2009

Cindy B and W photoBy Cynthia Wright, Author, Sr Technical Recruiter

Competition is fierce and employers can pick and choose who they want to hire.  More importantly they can select who they do not want to hire.

Professionalism does not stop at a well-crafted resume and a great suit.

Despite the state of the economy, many candidates still make serious (and preventable) mistakes that hinder job search progress and often prevent them from receiving a job offer.

These are the top five behaviors you should avoid in your job search.

# 5:  Unprofessional or suggestive e-mail addresses

A finance candidate sent a resume with the e-mail address: hotchick@domain.com.  The candidate may have been looking to stand out and get noticed. She definitely did but not for the right reason. Have two e-mail addresses, even if you need to establish one just for your job search. Use the professional one on your resume.

# 4:  Unprofessional or annoying answering machine messages

Consider this scenario: A hiring manager calls to invite you in for an interview. You are obviously a candidate the manager is seriously considering. The call is answered by an answering machine featuring a young child who can barely be understood. It’s cute to your friends. It’s annoying to a hiring manager. Even worse, the machine emits loud music or a strange message. That is an equally annoying turnoff, which may cause a prospective employer to move on to the next candidate.
