Few things are more important when job hunting than your resume. What many don’t realize is that the accuracy of the resume is as important as the visual appeal of the document. When forming a resume, or updating an old one, it’s important to make that resume as accurate and honest as possible. Here are a few reasons why.
Employment Checks
Once a feature of larger companies, many smaller companies these days are utilizing a background check program or provider for resume checks of prospect employees. What that means for you as a prospective employee is that they will be looking at your entire work history in detail, and inaccuracies on your resume could lead to red flags for companies. Accuracy and honesty on your resume will only further validate your value to a business when they check (and they likely will).
Competency
Not only is dishonesty and inaccuracy a way to potentially keep you from being employed, it is also a great way to potentially cause your competency to be questioned, especially in relation to very specialized or technical skills. Simply having experience with a software program doesn’t mean your proficient in it, and claiming to be so could cause employers to have different expectations of your skills.
Purpose
One of the most undervalued aspects of a resume is often purpose. Having a clear, concise, well developed purpose for applying can mean a lot to employers. Often resumes are focused on meeting what they believe to be employers’ must know facts, that they never give employers a true explanation of who they are and why they would be a benefit to a company. Being honest about who you are, why you’re pursuing a job and what makes you unique could help you be separated from the pack enough to be hired.
When applying for a job be sure to supply accurate, honest information to potential employers. Although it’s possible to slip through unnoticed, it’s better and more secure to for your future in the company or industry to be honest and accurate. Job hunting isn’t easy. Don’t make it more difficult with false information.
