There are many benefits to publishing online content for your job search- but blogging is not the only way. There are many alternatives to blogging that job seekers can leverage to expand and reinforce their online brand and help to improve their online visibility. I’ll cover 5 in this blog post.
What Are The Goals of Publishing Online Content?
When you decide to publish content online for your job search, you have three main goals…
First you want to demonstrate, via the content, your skills, experiences, expertise and thought leadership. The content you publish can bring your resume or LinkedIn profile alive.
Second, if you are in a profession that requires outstanding writing skills, publishing online content is a way to demonstrate your writing skills.
Last, online content can help with your search engine optimization. Said another way- if someone Googles your name, your online content should come up in search results.
What are 5 Alternatives To Blogging for Your Job Search?
The first alternative to blogging that I want to share is article writing & publishing. This is the process of writing individual, original articles on the business topics of your choice and publishing them on article marketing websites such as Hub Pages or Associated Content. Article writing gives you the freedom to write as few or as many articles as you want and publish them at any time. If you decide to write articles, each entry should be a minimum of 500 words, to provide the full search engine optimization benefits.
The second alternative to managing your own blog, is writing guest posts on other blogs. After you determine the subject matter you want to write about, search out other bloggers who write about the same subjects. Using Technorati or Google Blog search can help with this.
After you find the blogs, use the “contact us” information and pitch the blog owner on your idea. Most bloggers are always looking for more, high quality content to add to their blog and will probably be happy to hear from you.
A third alternative to managing your own blog, is to comment on other people’s blogs. This is often called blog outreach. For this method to work, your comments need to be beyond “great blog post”. They need to be original, detailed and demonstrate your skills and abilities. They must include your first and last name in the comments, in order to provide search engine benefits. And, the comments should be on blogs that tie to your industry or profession.
A fourth alternative to blogging is to have someone interview you and publish the interview online. This is a great option for job seekers who may not be comfortable with their business writing skills.
To do this, you need to seek out Interviewers who write about the areas you are expert in. This could be a professional blogger or you can search About.com and find one of their Guides that writes about your area of expertise. One other option is to have a friend with business writing skills, interview you, then publish the interview on an Article Marketing website.
The last alternative I want to share is publishing an online press release. Similar to how a new business uses press releases to make announcements, you can do the same- about you- the job seeker. I recommend partnering with someone who has a PR or marketing background to help with the verbiage and set up of the release. And, I recommend using a reputable online press release website, like PRWEB , to distribute the release. This may cost you some small dollars, but it’s an original idea not used by many job seekers and could get you some great exposure.
I hope you found these five alternatives to managing your own blog helpful. I wish you great success in your job search.
